Steve Irwin had all-consuming love of wildlife, but he was also a dedicated and compassionate father to kids Bindi Irwin, 25, and Robert Irwin, 19. Their mom Terri Irwin shared a new video of her late husband on Instagram, and it’s full of super sweet family moments that show how much he cared for his kids.

“Steve was all about family, conservation, and fun,” Terri wrote on Instagram yesterday for Steve Irwin Day. “Let’s all celebrate #SteveIrwinDay.”

The throwback video features a mashup of precious interactions. In one, a little Bindi and Robert are all bundled up in warm coats as they throw a frisbee with their dad. A toddler Robert pretends to be a buffalo, and Steve pretends to be scared by the “poky” creature.

In another, Steve wears a blue button-down shirt to take pictures with his family, then hikes up a mountain with Bindi, grabbing her hand to celebrate making it to the top. He kisses Robert’s belly in another, and the toddler grins and wraps his little arms around his dad’s neck. One intimate moment shows Terri lying on the grass, while Steve holds a baby Bindi outside. He also rode a bike with baby Robert on his bike, while Bindi followed behind in her purple tricycle. My heart physically hurts from watching this adorable video! Steve tragically died in 2006 before he could see his kids grow up, and it’s so heartbreaking.

Fans agreed, with one person commenting, “I will never NOT be sad about the world losing this man 😭.”

“Happy Steve Irwin day! The amount of impact your family has had on my love of wildlife is amazing. Since I was a kid I’ve been glued to the tv watching all your adventures! Thank you!” another person wrote.

Someone else wrote, “Steve was the first hero to introduce me to the other side of wildlife. He made me realize that snakes and alligators and crocodiles 🐊 were valuable parts of our world. I’m forever grateful for his show and continue to be thankful to his fantastic family that has boldly and courageously continued on his legacy despite their immense grief. You all are so loved and we appreciate everything you’ve done and continue to do every day for the animal planet. 🥹🥰”

Yesterday, Bindi and Robert both shared throwback tributes of their dad. In a photo of herself hugging her dad, Bindi wrote, “To the world, he will be remembered as the greatest Wildlife Warrior. To our family, he will be remembered as our world.”

Robert wrote, “Today, November 15 is Steve Irwin Day. A day to remember our dad, the greatest Wildlife Warrior on the planet. He was one man who changed the world forever and continues to inspire the next generations.”
