A Resurfaced Clip of Angelina Jolie as a New Mom Has Us Practically Peeing Our Pants from Laughing so Hard

Angelina Jolie has two decades of parenthood experience (with six kids!) under her belt, but she began her motherhood journey just as bewildered as everyone else. The Lara Croft: Tomb Raider star adopted her first child Maddox, now 22, from Cambodia in 2002, and a resurfaced video from that time is making us laugh so hard.

Ellen DeGeneres shared a vintage video from an interview she did with Jolie on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “Twenty years ago, Angelina Jolie stopped by my show for the first time! Angelina told me about life as a mom,” the former talk show host captioned the video on Instagram.

Toddler Years

In the video, the humanitarian opens about motherhood with Maddox. “The first seven months — well, we do travel back to Cambodia a lot. But his first seven months was just straight Khmer language,” Jolie said, adding that he had “a few words” that she “just can’t understand.” That’s common for any parent, even if your child doesn’t speak a different language! Toddler talk is confusing for everyone.

Another thing that’s similar? Potty training! “He’s pretty potty trained,” Jolie said. “We’re celebrating the potty now. We’re embracing the potty.”

“You’re embracing the potty?” DeGeneres jokingly asked, making Jolie laugh. “You should celebrate, but maybe not embrace.”

“He gets very excited now, so when I come home, and he comes in, he doesn’t say, ‘Mama.’ He says, ‘Pee pee, poo poo.’” She continued, “And then he comes and he shows me the potty… and I do a potty dance.” DeGeneres asked to see the potty dance, and Jolie responded, “I kind of need him with me, it’s kind of a tango.”

Later, the Maleficent actress shared that she is splitting her time in between England and Cambodia, where Jolie has “the jungle house.”

“Talk about potty training, there’s no bathroom where you are, right?” DeGeneres asked at one point.

“Well, we’re working on that,” Jolie respondd.

“But you don’t have a bathroom in your house,” DeGeneres continued. “I’m telling you, you don’t. I read it.”

Jolie explained with a laugh that she is trying to bring “pipes and things” into the house, but for now, they are just embracing nature. “He loves going to — the one thing he’s really good at, he loves to pee outside,” Jolie said.

“Well, he sounds really well potty trained!” DeGeneres quipped. “Who doesn’t love to be peeing outside?” She also asked how Jolie “discourages” peeing outside, prompting Jolie to admit, “I don’t.”

“Because he lives, half the time he’s going to live in the jungle, so if he understands that if he doesn’t have a potty near him, and he finds a bush or a…” Jolie said in a fit of giggles. “As long as it’s not a friend’s houseplant.”

“Oh, I see. You have a line!” DeGeneres replied. Honestly, even if you don’t live half the time in the jungle, teaching your kids to pee outside is not a bad thing! (As a mom of three boys, I’ve definitely done this.)

In addition to Maddox, the Atelier Jolie owner adopted Zahara, now 19, from an Ethiopian orphanage in 2005; gave birth to Shiloh, now 17, in 2006; adopted Pax, now 20; and gave birth to twins Knox and Vivienne, now 15, in 2008. She shares her six kids with estranged ex Brad Pitt.

Last April, she brought Maddox to the White House State Dinner that honored South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Jolie wore a white Chanel dress and jacket and Maddox looked all grown up in a black suit for the rare outing together.

Although she doesn’t share much about Maddox, Jolie has opened up about her decision to adopt him and how she honors her adopted kids’ heritage.

In a June 2020 interview with Vogue India, the Girl, Interrupted star explained how she came to adopt her eldest son. “Cambodia was the country that made me aware of refugees. It made me engage in foreign affairs in a way I never had, and join UNHCR [United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees]. Above all, it made me a mom. In 2001, I was in a school programme in Samlout playing blocks on the floor with a little kid and as clear as day I thought: ‘My son is here.’”

“A few months later I met baby Mad at an orphanage,” she continued. “I can’t explain it and am not one to believe in messages or superstition. But it was just real and clear.”

In the same interview, she shared how special her three adopted children are. “With my adopted children, I can’t speak of pregnancy, but I speak with much detail and love about the journey to find them and what it was like to look in their eyes for the first time,” she explained. “All adopted children come with a beautiful mystery of a world that is meeting yours. When they are from another race and foreign land, that mystery, that gift, is so full. For them, they must never lose touch with where they came from. They have roots that you do not. Honour them. Learn from them. It’s the most amazing journey to share. They are not entering your world, you are entering each other’s worlds.”

Angelina Jolie is a mom of six — and the way she dotes on her kids is adorable!
