What new restaurants opened in the Swannanoa Valley in 2023?

Black Mountain News looks back at some of the new restaurants that opened in 2023.

From a new event space that is the home to a smash burger restaurant to a food truck specializing in drinks, here are the restaurants that opened this year in the Swannanoa Valley.

The RailYard

John Richardson had a soft opening for his new event space, The RailYard in March with an official opening date of April 15.

The space is home to burger concept SmashBalls, a restaurant that offers patrons smash burgers and accompaniments.

The RailYard is also home to another of Richardson’s ventures, PubCorbs, a nonprofit that Richardson says makes volunteering “simple, accessible and fun and then grab a beer afterwards.”

The venue also serves a variety of beers.

The RailYard is closed Monday and Tuesday, but is open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

The Railyard is located at 141 Richardson Blvd. in Black Mountain.

Bowl in the Wall

Utilizing the space in the WNC Outdoor Collective that was vacated when Cup of Jomo moved, Bowl in the Wall opened in May. The restaurant focuses on Asian-inspired bowls.

Bowl in the Wall is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m..

The Coddiwompler

Though first opened at a different location in July, Amanda Bell found a permanent home for her mobile cafe The Coddiwompler in Black Mountain in November.

She shares the space with Voodoo Roux, a Cajun food truck that opened last year.

The Coddiwompler focuses on beverages, as Bell worked for 15 years as a bartender and bar manager, though the mobile cafe does not offer alcoholic beverages. Instead, Bell focuses on “healthy and delicious drinks.”

The Coddiwompler’s is closed Monday and is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Coddiwompler is located at 108 Black Mountain Ave. in Black Mountain.

Loott House, Terra Nova Beer Co.

Loott House, a burger restaurant, and Terra Nova Beer Co., a new brewery, teamed up to open a joint taproom-restaurant in November in Swannanoa.

Loott House opened at a different location in June 2022, but, when approached to move to join Terra Nova Beer Co., co-owner Ali Whitman told the Citizen Times she and husband and co-owner Jake Whitman “couldn’t say no.”

Loott House and Terra Nova Beer Co. are open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Thursday through Saturday.

Beradu

Patrick and Maggie Beraduce have set an opening date for the restaurant portion of Beradu for Dec. 27.

Though Beradu owners Patrick and Maggie Beraduce planned to open their new market and restaurant concept by mid-October of this year, the restaurant portion of the business now has an official opening date of Dec. 27.

Head chef Patrick Beraduce told Black Mountain News in September his cooking focuses on “utilizing invasive species and wild game,” a style of cooking he hopes to bring to Black Mountain.

The menu will change with the seasons, but Maggie Beraduce said she wants Beradu to have an inclusive menu offering vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options.

The market is currently open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Beradu is located at 2 East Market St. Suite A/B in Black Mountain.
