USA Today reports that skyrocketing avocado prices are causing many restaurants to take the creamy treat off their menus altogether. So while your pang of financial guilt for buying the stuff might finally subside, it'll most likely be replaced with an intense craving for the good old days.

So exactly how bad is this avocrisis? Well, according to Rabobank's vice president and senior analyst David Magaña, it's pretty damn bad. He told USA Today that “this is the highest price for this time of the year in at least a decade, probably more." In fact, compared to July 2018, this year's wholesale prices (at least during the first week of the month) for mid-sized avocados is up 129 percent as the price of a 25-pound box jumped from $37 to $84.25.

Eater notes that this catastrophe simply comes down to an issue of supply and demand. Over the past year, as avocado consumption continued to rapidly increase, production in California and Mexico (which supplies around 80 percent of American avocados) dropped significantly. That means that sadly, our Mexican brothers and sisters are also suffering from an avocado shortage. Scratch that, they're definitely suffering.

In fact, the Mexican government told the Associated Press that this "slight drop" in their own production, as well as an "increased demand in the United States" has left the country without one of its dietary staples, and it's making people miserable.

Guys, things have gotten so bad, Mexicans are reportedly resorting to the absurd creation of "mock guacamole." That's right. Pictures of a "blended emulsion of tomatillo, zucchini, oil and chile" are rapidly taking over the country's social media channels and people are pissed off. As they should be!
