Restaurant of the Week: Buckhorn Resort

MUNISING, Mich. (WJMN) – About 15 minutes outside of Munising, you’ll find Buckhorn Resort. A place to eat, sleep and play.

“So we call ourselves a resort because we have many different things,” said Andy Cooper, co-owner, Buckhorn Resort. “We have our lodging. We have some cabins to rent and hotel units. Then we have our bar and restaurant. We also had gas outside. So we’re kind of a destination spot for people on a long ride because they know they can fill up here and don’t have to pack up with gas cans. They can just stop at the gas pump and fill up.”

Cooper and his family have ran the resort for about 12 years.

“This has been my life since I was 16-years-old,” said Cooper. “Before that, we had a cabin down the road and we lived in Wisconsin so we’d come here all the time.”

Whether you’re a guest at the resort or a regular for their broasted chicken, you’re treated like family.

“Our main seller is burgers,” said Cooper. “I’d say our most popular for the locals in the area is our broasted chicken. A lot of people get our broasted chicken dinner. So we got burgers, sandwiches and chicken and fish everyday of the week.”

At Buckhorn, you can’t beat a meal with a view.

“Our restaurant overlooks Hovey Lake,” said Cooper. “Right over it. You’ll see eagles, swans, ducks, goose. Our birdfeeders right outside the windows are a big hit for the kids. They act like they’ve never seen a squirrel before. It’s pretty funny. Then for our lodges, we have our big lodge which is down the hill about a quarter mile in that sleeps about 20 people. It’s a big one. Then our close one right here is freshly remolded a couple of years ago. That overlooks the lake too. Then we got our hotel, which does not overlook the lake but it’s not far at all.”

Being on the trails, this business took a hit this past winter with the mild weather.

“It was terrible,” said Cooper. “Sales were over 100% down. There was nothing we could do about it. There was no snow. We had quite a few groups that come year after year in our lodges. They take the whole week so they get first dibs for the next year. It’s the same crew every year. We have a lot of them still come up because they had their vacation time taken. They had the time off and not going to sit at home with the wives.”
