Four more new restaurants and bars adding spice and seafood to Ocean Springs

Four new restaurants and bars are opening in Ocean Springs, adding more Indian cuisine, a seafood restaurant, a daiquiri bar and the area’s third Empanola location.

Ocean Springs is known for its diverse restaurants and these add more choices to the mix of more than 100 eateries in an around town.

The new restaurants are:

Killer Crab & Seafood Co., which has a popular restaurant in Gautier, is opening on Washington Avenue, next to Fayard’s Marathon. It’s near exit 50 of I-10 and was the long-time location of Taranto’s Seafood Co., which closed earlier this year.

The owners said they hope to have their new place open by April 26, and will be turning out boiled crawfish and steamed shrimp, along snow, Dungeness and king crab legs and other seafood.

Empanola Ocean Springs will be opening at 718 Bienville Blvd., between the Biloxi Bay Bridge and Washington Avenue. This is the third Coast location, with the others on Popp’s Ferry Road in west Biloxi and on Howard Avenue in east Biloxi.

The owners say the Ocean Springs will have a drive up window, lots of parking and outdoor courtyards and gardens.

A third Empanola location in South Mississippi is on U.S. 90 in Ocean Springs. Empanola is a New Orleans-based empanada chain.

Empanolas are South American stuffed pocked sandwiches with a New Orleans twist. They are filled with sweet or savory ingredients like crawfish etoufee, gumbo, shrimp and cheese, and others.

Hwy to India and the Daiquiri Factory Bar are neighbors in a shopping center at 1408 Bienville Blvd. According to records, they are owned by the same person who brought Indian Delight to the Ocean Springs area last year.

Gautam Nautiya opened the first Indian Delight in Hattiesburg after leaving New Orleans to strike out on his own and added the location on Washington Avenue, north of Ocean Springs, in the fall.

He studied culinary arts in Mumbai and came to the United States to work at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans, he said during a Hardy Street interview.

Indian Delight has been very popular since it opened with a menu that is familiar for those who want to try Indian food and more adventurous entrees for those who crave something exotic and spicy.

Hwy to India is a much smaller restaurant that is getting big reviews.

Open for lunch and dinner daily except Monday, Hwy to India offers vegetarian and non-vegetarian appetizers and entrees, along with a large variety of Indian breads baked in a tandoori clay oven.

Among the entrees are salmon, chicken or lamb chop marinated in their own yogurt and spices and roasted in the tandoori oven.

In addition to classic curries made with chicken, lamb or shrimp is a kadala curry made with chickpeas.

Customers can choose their own spice levels at Hwy to India, and when they need a place to cool their palates or linger in Ocean Springs, Daiquiri Factory Bar is right next door. It will featured new flavors and a pool table.
