New Research Suggests Most Dogs Are in Need of More Friends

All of us want our dogs to live the happiest, healthiest and longest lives possible, but one factor that plays an important part in this goal is something that a lot of us don't think about that often.

We take veterinary care, exercise, what food they eat all into consideration, but just as important is our dog's socialization.

The study, led by led by Snyder-Mackler and published in the journal Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health, is the subject of a Washington Post article which states social companionship from adult humans and other dogs was determined to have the largest positive impact on a dog’s health as they aged.

The article states, "Snyder-Mackler was careful to note that the results of his study didn’t necessarily mean that adopting a second dog would make your dog’s life better or longer. (Though he shared that his wife, a psychology professor, did use the findings as an excuse to get a second dog.) He also notes that humans can be just as good (and for some dogs, better) social partners for their pets — every animal is unique, and not all dogs enjoy the company of their peers. But what the results show clearly is that strong social companionship has an overall positive effect on a dog’s health and well-being."

Some dogs are dog aggressive and don't get along with other dogs. Other dogs are dog selective and choosy about the other dogs and humans they want to interact with. And some dogs are dog social and love playing with just about any dog they see.

How To Help Your Dog Be More Social

Taking your dog to visit a dog park is an obvious answer, because you'll probably see other pet parents there helping their own dogs make friends. You may even encounter other dogs just going on a walk in your own neighborhood.

Visiting your local pet supply store is another option, and so is enrolling your dog in an extra obedience class or a class that teaches tricks other than typical dog commands.

There are apps like BarkHappy and Pawmates. You can even make posts in your local social media neighborhood groups to see if any other dog owners would like to arrange a meet up.

Dog daycare is another option, because your dog is sure to have play time with other dogs while you tend to housework or work-work or even just dropping them off for socialization.

So if you want your dog to be truly happy, make them some dog friends!
