How Rescuing a Kitten Led This Couple to Win the Actual Lottery

A good deed led to a Tacoma, Washington couple's lottery win.

Postal worker Joseph Waldherr told Seattle-based news station KIRO 7, as well as the city's radio station, KUOW, that the journey to the surprising win started when he found a kitten during his work shift.

He'd been hearing meowing from the same spot for two days, leading him to finally investigate the noise. That's when he found a trapped kitten and set it free, protecting it by putting it in the pocket of his sweatshirt.

Once his shift ended, he stopped by his local convenience store to buy a lottery ticket with the kitten in tow, because he felt that he was having a lucky day thanks to the feline.

He told KIRO 7 that after forgetting about his purchase for a few days, he scanned the code on his phone and his wife noticed that a "See Lottery Office" message appeared.

In disbelief, the couple double-checked the winning number, coming to realize they not only did they have a winning ticket, but it would earn them a whopping $717,500. They also decided to keep the kitten, which they named Peaches, because of its peach-colored cheeks.

As for how Waldherr plans to spend the money, he plans to save part of it, but he mainly wants to use it to help others. He shared plans for donating to various charities, as well as helping his parents live more comfortably amid their retirement. "My wife and I have everything we need. We just want to help others," he told KUOW.
