Required Viewing: Locals Only Teahupo’o Surf Edit

Nobody knows a wave better than the locals.

And, ipso facto, nobody surfs said wave better than the locals.

Case and point: the locals of Teahupo’o, Tahiti, one of the world’s heaviest lefthand reefbreaks, home to an annual WSL CT stop, and host of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In a new, admittedly stunning edit – with hi-def footage, drone angles, and super slo-mo clips – surf filmmaker Tucker Wooding pays homage to the locals of Chopes.

Chargers like Matahi Drollet, Eimeo Czermak, Felix Patutra, Vahine Fierro, Lorenzo Avvenenti, Kevin Bourez, Haunui David, Matehau Tetopata, Tikanui Smith, Gilbert Teave, Teva Dexter, and Raimana Van Bastolaer.

All the clips were shot during April and May of 2023.

About the clip, Wooding wrote:

“This video highlights the locals in Tahiti that surf one of the best waves in the world. Teahupoo Is a special place. The people, the scenery, and the wave is like nowhere else on earth.”

He’s not wrong. That’s why folks like Gabriel Medina, who hails all the way from Brazil, calls Chopes his favorite wave in the world. And Kelly Slater, too, who still has an outside chance of putting a cherry on top of his career with an appearance in the Olympics.

But, back to the locals. And the edit above.

Folks in the comments wrote:

“Eimeo is such a force of nature always impressing everyone from Pipeline to Chopes! Nice Drone shots and editing as always Tucker”

“this footage is fucking insane! absolutely next level!”

“The angles/perspective and timing are the best I've seen. Being able to see the harbor out to sea (intro and end) and then, the reef through crystal clear water while the locals get barreled is hugely appreciated. Obviously Mother Nature approves of what you're doing as well.”
