New Report Suggests Lash Extensions Are Becoming More Popular Than Mascara

If getting serious ~lash volume~ is part of your beauty routine, you've likely been introduced to the world of extensions and lash lifts (the latter of which has been called a "perm for your eyelashes," to paint a picture). It turns out that these procedures might be becoming even more popular than mascara itself, if a new report is any indication of the trend.

As noted by Elle, Business of Fashion released a report on July 24, claiming that the growth of mascara products within the UK is expected to drop to 2% by the year 2021, from 4% in the past three years (according to Euromonitor). They add that, at the same time, lash services like extensions are becoming more common among consumers who are looking for a longer-lasting effect.

Business of Fashion also mentions that mascara is a complicated product to formulate, adding that popular brands such as KKW Beauty, Kylie Cosmetics, Anastasia Beverly Hills and Huda Beauty don't have any mascara in their respective lineups.

Sarah Jindal, senior beauty analyst at Mintel, told BoF that consumer consumption of lash-related procedures is "at an all-time high." She added that "people are willing to invest a little bit more in going and getting a lash lift or lash extensions, because they know it then makes their routine in the morning that much easier."

Of course, mascara isn't going away anytime soon, so if the classic wand is still one of your faves, don't fret. After all, there's plenty of popular mascara products on the market, like the ones noted by Pinterest earlier this year, or Meghan Markle's favorite mascara that costs less than $10.

On the other hand, if you're ready to take the plunge and try extensions of your own, make sure you check out our guide that covers everything from avoiding infections (ouch!) to caring for your newly luscious lashes. When it comes to eyelashes, there's something for everyone — no matter what your preference may be.
