  • As plans are made for new residents to occupy Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate, an anecdote has reemerged about its previous occupants, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

  • Reportedly, the couple had at first requested that Queen Elizabeth gift them rooms within the castle itself.

  • She rejected the request and "hoped" that the couple would "respect" Frogmore Cottage.

There are some figures throughout history who, in their time, were so larger than life that they, through their words and deeds, could define themselves in the global consciousness. For their time on this Earth, they were able to write their own story, hoping to leave behind a legacy of their own making. The late Queen Elizabeth II was one such figure.

But when those larger-than-life figures finally leave this life, those words and deeds give others the power to define them for the rest of time. Because when others get to say what past stories and sentiments of the now-deceased icon are revealed or retold, even the most multi-faceted figures can become merely a cudgel to reinforce a point of view.

It's that which we must keep in mind when seeing which stories emerge regarding the late Queen, now nearly a year after her death.

This is to say, of course, that a new anecdote has covertly reemerged into the discourse, and it pertains to the Queen's relationship with her most controversial grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle.

This particular tale involves the residence that the Queen gifted to Harry and Markle after their 2018 wedding. According to The Mirror, the couple had initially requested to live "within the castle itself" after their wedding, asking if "living quarters could be made available after their marriage."

However, according to this story, the Queen herself deemed the request "inappropriate" and "firmly" rejected it. Instead, she offered up Frogmore Cottage, a residence so close to the Queen's own that the late Lady Elizabeth Anson described it as "essentially her back yard, her solitude, and her privacy."

Anson would also claim that the Queen had said, of the gifted cottage, "I hope they'll respect it."

One could question the timing of this anecdote reemerging or the motive behind specifically citing a quote attributed to the Queen regarding hoping the couple would "respect" the residence they were recently tossed out of by her son.

But ultimately, this is just a matter of protecting and defending the honor of Frogmore Cottage. Such a significant building shouldn't be marred by the kind of scandal and controversy the couple courted—which is why surely now the Royal Family will make sure its newest occupant will be dignified and uncontroversial.

...I'm sorry, they want to give it to who?!?!?!
