Reports: Chiefs agree to trade QB Alex Smith to Redskins
The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, the Kansas City Star’s Terez A. Paylor reports.
The deal can’t be officially completed until March 14, according to the report.
NFL Network has confirmed the Star’s report.

Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter report that Washington is sending Kansas City a third-round pick in exchange for Smith. ESPN’s Field Yates reports that cornerback Kendall Fuller is also being sent to Kansas City.
Schefter also reports that Washington has not had any contact with Cousins since the end of the season and that Smith and the Redskins have already agreed to a long-term deal.
QB Alex Smith and Washington now have reached an agreement on a new four-year contract extension, per sources. Smith, who had one year left on his contact, tied to Washington for next five seasons. Smith gets long-term deal from Washington that Cousins could not.

Smith is coming off a year with career highs in passing yards (4,042) and touchdowns (26). But the Chiefs drafted their apparent quarterback of the future in Patrick Mahomes, whom they traded up to select with the 10th pick in the 2017 draft.
Washington, meanwhile has been in a state of limbo with six-year veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, with whom the team has not been able to work out a long-term deal. The team has signed Cousins to a one-year franchise tag contract for each of the last two seasons.
The stunning move has garnered attention from current and former Redskins players on Twitter.
