Albert Pujols likely to miss rest of season after having knee surgery
Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is likely to miss the rest of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
The team announced the procedure on Wednesday. The surgery typically requires six weeks of recovery time.
Pujols has had previous surgery on same knee
Pujols had surgery on the same knee in 2012. The 10-time All-Star and three-time NL MVP with the St. Louis Cardinals is still a source of power in his 18th MLB season, hitting .245 with with 19 home runs and 64 RBI through 117 games.
Pujols ranks sixth all time in MLB with 633 home runs. He signed with the Angels in 2012 after 11 years in St. Louis, where he was a key player on two World Series championship teams.
Pujols, who will be 39 to start next season, still has three years and $87 million remaining on the 10-year $240 million deal he signed with the Angels.
Another blow for Angels
The Pujols surgey is the latest blow in a lost season for the Angels, who are now in fourth place in the AL West, 18 games behind the first-place Houston Astros.
The team lost two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher to a torn elbow ligament after nine starts that saw him post a 3.10 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 20 walks in 49.1 innings. Two-time MVP Mike Trout missed much of August with a lingering wrist injury that occured while the team was looking to hang on to long-shot postseason hopes. Gold glove shortstop Andrelton Simmons and outfielder Justin Upton have also missed time.
