For years, I strictly identified as a sneaker person. You’d never catch me in anything other than my Bondi 8 Hokas, Adidas Sambas, or those controversial Golden Goose sneakers because, no matter how glamorous my job, life in New York is difficult and involves walking miles and miles each day. That is, until I discovered Mary Janes, and realized, maybe a shoe can offer sneaker-like comfort in a slightly more dressy silhouette.

I’ve tried many Mary Janes, but my favorites are, hands down, Madewell’s Nettie Heeled Mary Janes, a block-heeled style that I often wear for nights out — especially when I want to look extra put together. They’re true to size, and with the brand offering half sizes, there’s no need to hesitate when ordering online because you’ll be able to find your perfect fit. What’s more, they’re actually unexpectedly comfortable — once you break them in, that is, which might take a few wears around the house with socks. But, after they’ve molded to your unique foot shape, the comfort is unparalleled. Trust me.

The Netties are made with what the brand calls its "Cloudlift Lite" padding (aka, a padded insole that makes it feel like you’re walking on a cloud). That design detail is probably why I’ve been able to walk miles and miles in these without needing to call an Uber — which is what often happens if I am ever brave enough to wear heels around NYC. And, unlike the Sex and the City pumps we saw growing up, these have a modest, nearly two-inch block heel, far more practical for life on the go. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the heel getting caught in any sidewalk grates. These are sturdy and durable, exactly what I need in an on-the-go shoe.

What I love the most about this pair is you can wear them with or without socks, and you get a different look every time. Versatility, is what I call it! Also, unlike many shoes, the double buckle straps, which are obviously fashionable, also serve a functional purpose, as they actually keep your feet in place, so there’s no slipping and sliding when walking. Best of all? The straps are also adjustable, which is great for days when I’m wearing thicker socks, need a bit more breathing room, or am dealing with swollen feet (which can happen in the summertime or after long periods of standing or walking).

I’m not the only one obsessed with these shoes, either; they’re a best-seller on Madewell’s site with plenty of 5-star reviews. “I personally find them incredibly comfortable and, of course, very stylish,” wrote one reviewer, claiming they exude French-girl chic vibes. I agree. They’re also great for all ages; after all, Mary Janes truly are an ageless shoe style celebs like Diane Keaton and Amal Clooney have worn.

My advice? Don’t hesitate to add the $148 Nettie Mary Janes to your cart, and while you’re at it, consider my other Madewell personal favorite: the Greta Ballet Flats. They’re the easiest way to upgrade any basic outfit into Alexa Chung territory. Anyone else ready for spring now?
