How To Replace Siri With ChatGPT—It's So Much Easier Than You'd Think

For the past few months (or years, really, if you've been paying attention), buzz about artificial intelligence (AI) has been taking over the internet. That's largely in part due to the roll-out of something called ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI that launched in November 2022. Even more so than Amazon Alexa and Apple's Siri, ChatGPT displays insanely human-like capabilities. It can write everything from emails and articles (ahem, don't come for my job) to complex code. And now, loads of people are opting to replace Siri with ChatGPT because it might just be the better robot.

Can I Use ChatGPT on My iPhone?

ChatGPT is compatible with Apple, so you can definitely use it on your iPhone or iPad so long as your iOS is up to date.

However, if you have an Android, you're going to encounter a different approach to setting up ChatGPT (more about that below).

To replace Siri with ChatGPT on your iPhone, you can change the name of the shortcut in the Shortcuts app. But first, you need an AI account.

How To Replace Siri With ChatGPT Through GitHub

  • Step 1: Go to https://platform.openai.com on your iPhone web browser, then either create an account or login to an existing one you already made.

  • Step 2: Choose the three lines in the upper-right (AKA the hamburger menu) and select your account at the bottom.

  • Step 3: Select "View API keys."

  • Step 4: Click on "Create new secret key." And create it.

  • Step 5: Copy the API key you just made.

  • Step 7: Scroll down to select "ChatGPT Siri 1.2.4." This will bring you directly to the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.

  • Step 8: Click on "Set up Shortcut."

  • Step 9: Paste in the API key.

  • Step 9: In Shortcuts, hold down on the "ChatGPT 1.2.4 Shortcut."

  • Step 10: Rename it to anything you choose—maybe ChatGPT, Siri Pro or Chatbot. For this demonstration, I renamed the Shortcut to "French Fry."

  • Step 11: Try it out by telling your iPhone, "Hey Siri, [insert name of your Shortcut here.]" So if you named the Shortcut "ChatGPT," then say, "Hey Siri, ChatGPT."

The above photo is a screenshot after I said, "Hey Siri, French Fry," and then I asked if it was a form of ChatGPT.

What Can I Replace Siri With?

Sorry to knock Apple, but Siri doesn't have the best reputation for being the best representation of an intelligence. No judgment here if you'd prefer to replace Siri with another kind of assistant. In fact, there are AI chatbots other than ChatGPT that can replace Siri as well.

You can replace Siri with Assistant.aiAI Chat, Chat with Ask AI, Genie and ChatOn—all of which are apps whereas ChatGPT is not yet an app.

Other apps to replace Siri that are compatible with both Android and iOs include AlissuRapid ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, Google Bard, Jasper, WriteSonic and Colossal Chat.
