California Rep. Eric Swalwell has denied farting during a live TV interview.
A loud noise was heard when Swalwell was speaking during Monday’s episode of Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC.
Today in "I can't believe this just happened" California Rep. Eric Swalwell is denying farting on TV. A sentence I never thought I'd write, but here we are! The incident in question went down during Monday’s episode of Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC, when Swalwell was casually trying to talk about allegations that President Donald Trump used taxpayer dollars to cheat in the 2016 election.
Unfortunately, his musings were interrupted by what can only be described as a very loud farting noise, which conspiracy theorists claim a) he is responsible for, and b) he reacted to by stifling a smile while talking.
In the clip Swalwell says “Chris, so far the evidence is uncontradicted that the president used taxpayer dollars to help him cheat—” at which point the farting noise can be heard. He then finishes his sentence with a slight smile, continuing “—an election. And the complaint that I’ve heard from Republicans....”
For what it's worth, Hardball claims it was a cup moving across the desk, and they're using the opportunity to sell merch (classic).
And FYI, Buzzfeed reporter Addy Baird ended up texting Swalwell to get the inside story, and he wrote back “It was not me!!!!!" and “Ha. And I didn’t hear it when I was speaking.”
Cool, I'll leave you alone with your thoughts. But first:
