This remote village in Bosnia is a refuge from modern society
Lukomir is the highest village in Bosnia and is elevated at nearly 4,921 feet, on top of Bjelašnica mountain.
The residents of the secluded area claim it is the perfect refuge from modern civilization — unaffected by the pandemic and still a bastion of cultural traditions.
Villagers live in stone houses and tend to their land and flocks adorned in handmade clothing. The traditional dress dates back centuries. It’s a way of life that has largely kept them safe during times of war and crises. The villagers only leave Lukomir, which translates to “harbor of peace,” to escape cold weather during winter. But they always return home in spring.
“There is no corona[virus] here. We move freely, without face masks and [protective] gloves,” Vejsil Comor, an 83-year-old villager, told the Associated Press.
Comor likes to respectfully tease people from the city who feel obligated to wear gloves and protective gear. He compared it to a new tradition.
“It is important to keep traditions alive, we have a saying here that it is better for a village, or a city, to die than to give up its traditions,” Comor said. “If I had to go to the city, I too would wear gloves.”
While tourists have recently started visiting Lukomir to see its vistas, medieval tombstones and unique lifestyle, Covid-19 slowed things down this year.
“This is such a beautiful place, I love it. I love our traditional clothes, I love this landscape, I love everything here,” Raha Elezovic, a 65-year-old villager, told the Associated Press. “The coronavirus has not reached us. It spread all over the world, even in America, but not in Lukomir.”
