Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel won the road race at the UCI World Championships last year. After a disappointing 25th place finish in this year’s edition of the world championship road race on Sunday, Evenepoel rebounded to win the 2023 elite men’s individual time trial on Friday, earning another rainbow jersey in his ever-blossoming career.

The course was a challenging 47.8-kilometer course that ended in Stirling, with a tough uphill finish on cobbles. Evenepoel, 23, finished in a time of 55 minutes, 19.23 seconds to beat out second-place Filippo Ganna of Italy. Ganna, the world time trial champion in 2020 and 2021, was 12.28 seconds behind Evenepoel to win the silver medal.

Evenepoel was behind Ganna at the first intermediate checkpoint by four seconds, but the Belgian overtook the Italian at the second split, leading him by 10 seconds, and held that advantage through the finish.

19-year-old Josh Tarling (Great Britain) rode a remarkable time trial in his first-ever appearance in the elite TT. He was 48 seconds behind Evenepoel, which was good for third place overall—a bronze medal for the future star.

Brandon McNulty of the U.S. was took fourth, just outside the podium, making him the top American on the day. He was 1:26.91 off the top spot. Another American—Lawson Craddock—spent a hot minute in the hot seat. He clocked a time of 57:55.81 and ultimately finished 16th overall, the top placed American on the day.

It wasn’t to be for Wout Van Aert on Friday. The Belgian rider took fifth overall, 1:37.23 behind his countryman Evenepoel.
