The show will be based on Jonathan Eig's biography of Mohammed Ali, Ali: A Life. Per Deadline, "the series chronicles eight distinct and defining moments in Ali’s iconic life. Each episode will be framed by one of his fights, but the essence of the episode, what it’s really about, is the internal fight—the drama outside the ring. It will explore the struggle going on in the heart and mind of one of the most consequential and controversial figures of the 20th century."

Executive producers on Excellence include Page, Morgan Freeman, BlackKklansman co-writer Kevin Willmott, Lori McCreary for Revelations Entertainment, and Emily Brown. Biographer Eig will serve as a producer. Eig tweeted, "I've been working on this for years and I'm so excited to finally share the news! Rumble, young man, rumble!"

Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay Jr., is one of the greatest athletes of all time, and frequently called the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. He died at age 74 in 2016. The news of Excellence was announced on the 52nd anniversary of the first Ali-Frazier fight, when Ali fought Joe Frazier in a match titled "The Fight of the Century" at Madison Square Garden in 1971.

Excellence: 8 Fights marks Page's entry into producing. He's previously starred in Bridgerton season one, The Gray Man, and is set to appear in Dungeons & Dragons; Honor Among Thieves. Page has also been in the running to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond.
