On Instagram, Witherspoon announced her newest pick, Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez, in a short video. “Our March book club pick is here and I am so excited because it’s about something that I really love which is art history,” Witherspoon said. “I have always loved painting and this book, it just dives right in.”

“It’s about the mysterious world of art and which artists get celebrated and which don’t – and I’m gonna give you a little spoiler here – women do not get celebrated as much as male artists,” the actress continued.

The Oscar winner then goes on to explain the story of the novel, which follows aspiring artist Raquel as she connects with the story of Anita de Monte, an artist who died many years earlier. “The main character discovers this artist and asks some of these really big questions like ‘Who is remembered?’ and ‘Who is left behind?’ and ‘Why?” Witherspoon said.

“This one gave me goosebumps,” she continued. “I think you guys are gonna love it.”

In the official description of the novel, we learn more about Raquel and Anita’s backstories. “Anita de Monte, a rising star in the art world, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t,” the description says of the artist.

13 years later, Raquel, a student at College Hill, becomes fascinated by Anita’s work. “When Raquel becomes romantically involved with a well-connected older art student, she finds herself unexpectedly rising up the social ranks,” the description details. “As she attempts to straddle both worlds, she stumbles upon Anita’s story, raising questions about the dynamics of her own relationship, which eerily mirrors that of the forgotten artist.”

“Moving back and forth through time and told from the perspectives of both women, Anita de Monte Laughs Last is a propulsive, witty examination of power, love, and art, daring to ask who gets to be remembered and who is left behind in the rarefied world of the elite,” the summary concludes. We can’t wait to read it!
