And, as we get ready for the end of the year, The Morning Show star announced her long-awaited final pick of 2023: Before We Were Innocent by Ella Berman.
“It’s almost the end of the year, and we’re gonna end our book club in 2023 the same way we started it – with a thriller,” Witherspoon revealed in a video on Instagram. “This book has everything in it. It’s about these three high school friends who go on vacation to Greece, but only two of them come back and the media automatically cast the remaining girls as these murderers and it tears their life apart.”
Witherspoon continued, explaining that the book then has a major time jump. “But then fast-forward to present day, where one of the women, Joni, has used this event in her past to make herself a self-help guru and the other, Bess, has done everything to hide away from it,” she continued.
“But then there’s a new murder, and it might just be the thing that brings them back together and confront what happened all those years ago in their past,” she concluded, adding that she thinks “you’re gonna really enjoy it.”

Talking about her inspiration for the novel, Berman told Witherspoon’s book club that the idea for the story came to her after rereading some of her teenage diaries. “I was struck by the intensity within the pages – particularly when anything concerned my tight-knit friendship group,” Berman said. “Not long after, I decided to write the book I’ve always wanted to write – one about friendship. Specifically, teenage friendship, in all its glory and its gore. The dark side as well as the intense love.”
“Inevitably, Joni and Bess are cast as the villains of the story – roles they will have to reckon with over the next decade as their true sense of self (and one another) slips further out of reach,” Berman said of her characters. “And while there is a mystery at the core of Before We Were Innocent, this story is as much an elegy to friendship as it is anything else—a love story for the people in our lives who are able to coax our true selves back out in even the darkest of times.”
