Witherspoon first talked about the book, Maybe Next Time by Cesca Major, in a panel alongside Mindy Kaling and Jennifer Garner at the first ever Shine Away event, a conference hosted by her production company Hello Sunshine. There, the trio discussed the importance of telling women’s stories.

Witherspoon’s book club, which she launched in 2017, has always championed women’s voice thanks to her choice of female-led narratives and her latest selection is no different.

Maybe Next Time, which was published earlier this year in March 2023, is already being developed by Hello Sunshine as a movie adaptation on AppleTV+.

Right now, Maybe Next Time has a major Black Friday deal at just $16.06 (aka 46% off)! If you’re curious to read it, there’s no better time to buy than now!

The book has a Groundhog’s Day element to it as the main character must live the same day over and over to save her husband from an unfortunate fate.

Overwhelmed by the stresses of life, Emma is too caught up in work and juggling the kids to remember that it’s her and her husband’s wedding anniversary. When her upset husband, Dan, leaves the house in a flurry, Emma doesn’t realize it is the last time she will ever see him…. until she wakes up and gets to live the entire day over again.

“It’s a book that goes back in time. It’s almost like Groundhog’s Day, but for this woman who has made all these decisions in her life, and she prioritizes work and she has been ignoring a lot of the really key fundamental relationships in her life,” Witherspoon summarized, per The Wrap.

Emma enters a spiral of repeatedly trying to right her wrongs, chose life over work, catch up with forgotten friends and attempt to find herself all while saving Dan.

“The ending of this book is so beautiful. I was sobbing when I read it in a good way. It makes you remember what’s really important about family and your partnerships,” Witherspoon said. “This book kept me on the edge of my seat,” the actress shared.

The book’s author was also a speaker at the event and offered a summary of her already-popular novel. She told the audience that the book speaks to the stresses many women trying to do it all can relate to. By living her day over again, Emma has the chance to “discover all the secrets going on and all the many people’s lives and whether she could change the course of that day and maybe even the course of her life.”

“I wanted to write this book as a reminder of the many ways women are pulled in a hundred different directions,” Major wrote for the book club. “The many ways we push the things and the people we love down the list so that we can tick off other things. I wanted to see what would have to change to make me stop, to make me reflect and to make me change.”
