Reese Witherspoon Will Return as Tracy Flick In A Sequel to Election

Way back in 1999, Reese Witherspoon became a breakout star thanks to polar opposite roles in two soon-to-be-classic teen movies. In Cruel Intentions, she played the innocent Annette Hargrove, and in Alexander Payne's satirical black comedy Election, she played the scheming, ruthlessly ambitious Tracy Flick. Now, Witherspoon is reprising that iconic character in a sequel.

Titled Tracy Flick Can’t Win, the sequel is reportedly being developed for the streaming platform Paramount+. Per Deadline, Payne will return as director, and Witherspoon will produce in addition to starring.

The original movie was based on a novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, and centered on a frustrated high school teacher (Matthew Broderick) who sets out to sabotage Tracy's run for student body president. Tracy Flick Can't Win is based on a follow-up novel by Perrotta, which came out this summer.

Witherspoon shared an excited tweet last fall promoting the print release of Tracy Flick Can't Win, so this news has surely been in the works for a while. There's no word yet on whether Broderick will return.

The sequel's plot follows an adult Tracy who's come full circle—she's now a hardworking assistant principal at a public high school, still fighting for power and recognition. Payne is adapting the novel with Jim Taylor, his collaborator on many past scripts including the first Election.
