Reese Witherspoon Posted A 1996 Selfie With Paul Rudd, And They Still Look The Same Now

  • Reese Witherspoon shared a throwback photo with Paul Rudd on Instagram.

  • “Wait a second... did #PaulRudd and I take the ‘Selfie’ in 1996?” she wrote.

  • Fans quickly noted that the two actors look nearly the same today as they did more than 20 years ago.

Reese Witherspoon has pioneered so much in her career, so it really comes as no surprise that she basically invented the selfie. Well, she and Paul Rudd did, that is. In a Sept. 22 Instagram post, the Morning Show actress shared a cheesin’ photo with her former Friends co-star from—wait for it—1996, which means it was likely taken on a disposable camera.

“Wait a second... did #PaulRudd and I take the ‘Selfie’ in 1996?” she captioned the post. In less than 24 hours, it garnered more than 1 million likes and nearly 9,000 comments, most of them pointing out one of two things: Witherspoon looks exactly like her 21-year-old daughter, Ava Phillippe (in fact, she was around her age in the pic) and Paul Rudd does not age. (Can we get that skincare routine?)

“This is confirmation that Paul Rudd indeed has a time machine,” blogger Sarah Nicole Landry commented. “I’m in love with this relic fit for the Smithsonian,” Selma Blair wrote. “Trendsetter,” Gal Gadot added.

Some fans even called for a re-creation photo with Rudd and Ava. “I bet if Paul Rudd took a picture with your daughter today it would look identical to this,” a fan noted. “Was this taken yesterday with @avaphillippe or was it 24 years ago with @reesewitherspoon. We may never know…” someone else wrote.

Another follower was impressed by Witherspoon’s selfie-taking skills without a fancy front-facing camera to gauge the frame. “Selfies I tried to take back then have me and someone’s ear,” they wrote, adding a laughing emoji. “Or both our mouths only.”

The pair of actors have been friends for a long time, clearly, and have worked together on a number of projects—one of their most loved being How Do You Know from 2010, which Netflix subscribers have revisited during quarantine. Witherspoon took note of the surge in views, and recently shared a classic shot from the film.

“Noticed some of y’all are watching How Do You Know on @netflix so here’s a throwback of me and #PaulRudd from 10 years ago to kickstart your weekend!” she wrote. “For those who are curious: Paul Rudd is as wonderful in person as he is on screen.”

Of course he is.
