Reese Witherspoon updated her Instagram followers with news that she and her husband of nearly 12 years, Jim Toth, would be divorcing back in March. Now, as of August 2, 2023, they're officially divorced after signing a marital dissolution agreement, per TMZ. They also formed a parenting plan for their 10-year-old son, Tennessee.

Actor Ryan Philippe was Reese's first husband (with whom she shares children Ava and Deacon). The Morning Show star married her second husband, Jim Toth, in 2011. You might not know him because, unlike the men of Reese’s past (or her rom-com co-stars), Jim isn't a star of the big or small screen.

The pair was pretty private (in fact, a source told PEOPLE that Reese loved that he wasn't a celebrity back when they first started dating in 2010). Reese did indulge in some relationship updates every now and then on Instagram, such as this Christmas card photo she shared in December:

While you might not recognize Jim Toth, he's pretty influential in Hollywood. Here’s everything to know about Reese Witherspoon’s ex-husband.

The couple first met at a mutual friend's party.

In 2012, Reese told Elle magazine that she was at a friend’s party, when a man got in her face. “This really drunk guy was hitting on me, making such an idiot of himself, yelling at me. He was like, [slurring, scowling, pointing finger in her face] `You don't know me.' And I was like, ‘Yeah, I know. I don't know you!’”

Then, Jim swooped in. "It happened out of the blue," she told Elle magazine. “Jim came over and said, 'Please excuse my friend. He's just broken up with someone.' Jim was a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation. That's just kind of who he is, a really good person,” the actress said at the time.

Jim is 53—and a Leo.

Jim was born on July 27, 1970, which makes him a Leo.

During his childhood, Jim lived in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania and then attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles for college, according to LinkedIn.

His net worth is around $4 million.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Jim Toth is worth around $20 million. As of 2023, Reese is reportedly worth $400 million.

For many years, Jim worked as a talent agent (but not for Reese).

In 2010, Jim Toth was a co-head of motion picture talent department at the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which reps a host of Hollywood's top talent. He spent 23 years at the agency, and personally represented stars including Matthew McConaughey, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jamie Foxx, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Salma Hayek, Zooey Deschanel and Neil Patrick Harris, per Deadline.

Jim and Reese got engaged after less than a year of dating.

The couple first went public in February 2010, per PEOPLE, and they were engaged by December of the same year, per US Weekly. They got married at Reese's ranch in Ojai in March 2011, and her children Ava and Deacon participated in the wedding, according to Glamour.

They have one child together.

Reese and Jim's son, Tennessee James Toth, was born in September 2012, per PEOPLE.

He is currently 10 years old. Obviously, the family spends a lot of time together. In 2022, Reese shared a photo of the couple volunteering with Tennessee at what looks like a gift drive for Christmas.

She also shared this family beach pic in January 2023:

They went into business together.

Jim serves as a member of the board of directors at Flowcode, a direct-to-consumer tech company, but he also works with Reese. The businessman has been a board member on a few of Reese’s business ventures—including her production company Hello Sunshine and Draper James, her clothing line—according to his LinkedIn profile.

Jim encouraged Reese to start producing movies.

In 2016, Reese said that Jim played an important role in her decision to start a production company.

"He said, 'You should produce movies. You read more books than anybody I know. You should just buy some of them and turn them into films,'" Reese told Harper's BAZAAR.

Flash forward to today, and Hello Sunshine has produced over 131 titles, per IMDb.

Jim and Reese owned some properties together.

In 2019, Reese and Jim bought a property on Zuma Beach in California for $6.3 million, they promptly sold it a year later for $6.7 million in November 2020. Then, they purchased a $16 million dollar English Country-style house in March 2020, according to Architectural Digest. It's just over 9,500 square feet with seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

In 2022, the pair sold the home for $21.5 million.

Jim is a “loving” father, according to Reese.

Last year, The Your Place or Mine star called Jim the most “loving/kind/caring” on Father’s Day. This past year, she shared another cuddly photo of Jim with their son, Tennessee.

“Happy Father's Day, JT! We are so lucky to have you in our lives. 💙Celebrating all the great Dads today!” She wrote.

They have part ownership of a soccer team together.

In April 2022, Reese and Jim joined the ownership group of the Nashville Soccer Club, according to a press release by Nashville Soccer Club.

"One of the things my family is most excited about is the @nashvillesc, which is why we are so excited to be a part of the ownership group moving forward and honored to be a part of the NSC family! ⚽️," Reese wrote on Instagram in a since-deleted post, per PEOPLE.

They had been "growing apart" for a while now.

The Your Place or Mine star shared the news of their divorce in a joint statement with her husband on March 24, 2023. "It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce," the couple wrote in the statement. "We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together."

Reese officially filed for divorce on April 1, per TMZ, who also confirmed that the couple had a prenup. The reason for their split was "irreconcilable differences," Page Six reported. In their joint statement, the couple also wrote their biggest priority is their son, Tennessee, and their "entire family as [they] navigate this next chapter."

After Reese and Ryan shared news of their impending divorce in a joint Instagram post, a source told Us Weekly that “Reese never wanted her marriage to end, but it’s not a secret that this has been brewing for some time."

While the couple had a healthy, happy marriage, they just grew apart, the source continued. “[She] couldn’t have asked for a better stepdad and father to their son, Tennessee.”

Although this chapter of their lives is over, it seems Reese and Jim did enjoy the time they spent together.
