Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth’s Finances Indicate They’ve Been Planning Their Divorce for Literal Years

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth are ending their marriage after almost 12 years, but while the couple just announced the news on Friday, the divorce has been in the works for quite a while. In fact, Reese and Jim have been liquidating their joint properties and companies since at least 2020.

According to Us Weekly, the former couple have been “quietly dividing assets for years,” and a source told the outlet that “they decided their marriage wasn’t going to last forever and that they should have a plan for splitting up their assets that wouldn’t destroy what they built together.”

Some examples? Reese and Jim sold their media company Hello Sunshine for a casual $900 million in 2021. As the source put it, “Instead of having to split up a huge company with dozens of employees and several divisions, they have a big pile of money—and there’s plenty for everybody.”

The pair have also been offloading properties left and right—including a Malibu farmhouse for over $6 million in November 2020, a Los Angeles “manor” for $21.5 million in March 2020, and a Nashville mansion for $7.35 million in October 2022.

As for why the couple are splitting up, reports hugely vary from the mild (“there is no drama, no event or reason”) to the extremely speculative (“the tattoos, the chunky weird jewelry, and dressing like somebody half his age really took hold”). Either way, the couple’s statement couldn’t have been more chill, with Reese writing, “We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”
