  • Ree Drummond shared why she was “elated” to go without sedation for a recent wisdom tooth removal.

  • “It made me feel alive,” she said.

  • The experience reminded her of her only “natural childbirth.”

The Pioneer Woman rang in 2024 with a full heart and one less tooth. On New Year’s Eve, Ree Drummond posed with family on Instagram, then elaborated to point out her slightly swollen face in follow-up posts. There, she explained why she declined sedation for a wisdom tooth pulled just two days prior.

“I am 54 years old, and I got one of my wisdom teeth pulled two days ago,” she captioned the Instagram story of herself, her daughter Paige, and Paige’s friend Anna, per People. She drew an arrow that pointed to her inflamed jawline and labeled it “gland.” Swelling or not, her smile was genuine.

Ree elaborated in a couple of heartfelt follow-up story posts: “I even asked the oral surgeon if I could take my wisdom tooth home. He said yes. I declined,” she explained. “I also declined sedation,” she continued. “It made me feel alive. It reminded me of my one natural childbirth (Bryce). I felt elated afterward! Ok bye.”

In conclusion, she wrote, “I miss my toofie.”

It’s unclear what type of wisdom tooth removal Drummond underwent, as oral surgery and sedation are standard in the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, per Mayo Clinic. It’s possible, however, that Drummond’s tooth was already exposed and needed to be pulled for other reasons.

In 2015, she wrote an essay that recounted the aforementioned natural birth in honor of her son, Bryce’s 13th birthday. She explained that she wanted to deliver her first two children, Alex and Paige, without the local pain relief of an epidural, but “buckled in both cases,” she wrote. She was determined to go medication-free in the third delivery, which she did with her son Bryce.

“I love all my children, but it was the most special birth experience,” she wrote. “I loved it even though I hated it at the time.”

She continued, “I was surrounded with love and I felt every single sensation and every single emotion,” she wrote. “I wasn’t groggy or nauseated or numb. He was the sweetest, roundest, most smiley baby ever, and I will always cherish my memories of that day.”

Wishing the Pioneer Woman a very happy New Year and a speedy recovery!
