Reddit Can't Get Over These IRL Evil Stepsisters

If you’re sitting in a pumpkin carriage, you’re going to want to strap in for this wild ride. Once upon a time, approximately two weeks ago, one man’s father passed away. The man, his wife “Candace,” his daughter, “Shiloh,” and his two stepdaughters traveled for the funeral. In a viral post on Reddit, the father said his wife booked two hotel rooms: one for her and her husband, and one for the three teenage girls.

At around 11 pm, he got a call from a distraught Shiloh.

“She told me that her stepsisters insisted that she sleep on the floor,” he said. “I went to see what the issue was and talked with my stepdaughters about it. They just shrugged and said, ‘It’s better this way…we’re more comfortable this way.'”

Dad was not having it. He told Shiloh to grab her things and went to book her a hotel room. While the internet is praising dad for his decision, it did not go over well with the rest of the family.

Candace had been in charge of the original booking while her husband was grieving the loss of his father. She chose to reserve just the one room for the girls so as to “not stir any drama” and had expected them to share the bed. Despite her daughters not following the plan, she still thinks her husband “mishandled” the situation.

“[My wife] said I wasted money and that Shiloh could’ve sucked it up for one night on the floor.”

In a matter of hours, nearly three thousand commenters on the “Am I The A**hole?” subreddit agreed that the stepdaughters and stepmother were at fault. We would call them “evil” or “wicked,” but a moderator jumped in and asked people to steer clear of such words.

“What I’m getting from this is that your stepdaughters were trying to live up to the Disney depiction of stepsisters and were shocked when they couldn’t just bully her into getting what they want. What’s extra gross is that they did it when coming back from Shiloh’s grandparent’s funeral. Talk about cruel.” one commenter said before asking why Candace reacted the way she did.

“Wtf is wrong with Candace if she sees [you booking another room] as playing favorites? Her daughters tried to make yours sleep on the floor for fun. Sounds like the apples don’t fall far from the tree.”

The rightfully-angry mob is urging the father to nip this behavior in the bud, calling the wife’s and stepdaughters’ reactions “very telling” and “red flags.” They find it hard to believe this is an isolated incident.

“I hope this leads to some conversations about how the daughter is treated by the stepdaughters and stepmother. My guess is the daughter has a lot of stories [he] doesn’t know about.”

They have praised Dad for standing up for his daughter, and point out that he has to continue to be the voice of reason if he wants to maintain a positive relationship with her.

“If you love your daughter and want her to stay in your life, it is indeed time to think. You didn’t mention your custody arrangement. If your daughter isn’t living with you full time and if she only comes over for visitation, you should expedite the thinking.”

Granted, expecting three teens to share one bed is a tall order. Next time, Dad should be in charge of the reservations and book a room with multiple beds, a sleeper couch, or a rollaway cot. Regardless, banishing Shiloh to the floor was an outrageous solution. Commenters said the dad should have insisted his wife sleep on the floor next to her daughters and that Shiloh sleep with him.

“Had the wife disagreed, her hypocrisy would’ve become apparent.”

Reddit can’t get over how akin this story is to Cinderella and how blatantly the stepsisters bullied Shiloh. Telling her to sleep on the floor was cruel, uncomfortable, and just plain gross. They say the stepsisters have been reading too many fairy tales: “…or not enough.”

That’s right. Don’t they know the stepsisters lose in the end? Shiloh may not have ridden off with a prince, but we sure hope she slid into a king-sized bed.
