Tim and Stacy Wakefield

Stacy Wakefield, widow of Red Sox player Tim Wakefield, whose death was announced on Oct. 1, 2023, has died, the team announced on behalf of the Wakefield family. She was 53.

"It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt, Stacy, passed away today at her home in Massachusetts," they wrote, noting that the mother of two was "surrounded by her family and dear friends, as well as her wonderful caretakers and nurses."

They described the loss as "unimaginable, especially in the wake of losing Tim just under five months ago."

"Our hearts are beyond broken," they added.

Tim, a former pitcher for the Boston-based team, was just 57 when he died of brain cancer last year—a diagnosis his former teammate Curt Schilling shared on his podcast without permission, resulting in backlash from fans. Schilling also revealed that Stacy was battling pancreatic cancer at the same time.

The Red Sox later confirmed that the couple was privately working through health issues that they preferred to keep undisclosed.

"We are aware of the statements and inquiries about the health of Tim and Stacy Wakefield. Unfortunately, this information has been shared publicly without their permission. Their health is a deeply personal matter they intended to keep private as they navigate treatment and work to tackle this disease. Tim and Stacy are appreciative of the support and love that has always been extended to them and respectfully ask for privacy at this time."

The Wakefield family requested privacy once again as they "try to process this profound loss,” thanking Stacy's medical team for their "unmatched care and support" and sharing their "appreciat[ion]" for fans' "kindness."

“We will remember Stacy as a strong, loving, thoughtful and kind person, who was as down-to-earth as they come," the added. "We feel so lucky to have had her in our lives, and we take comfort in the fact that she will be reunited with Tim, the love of her life."

Stacy is survived by her two children, Trevor, 20, and Brianna, 19.
