Red Dead Redemption Is Coming To Switch and PS4

Red Dead Redemption 2 was a smash hit when it was released on Xbox One, PS4, and PC in 2018, but what if you want to play the first game in the series? Up until now, your only option was to play the Xbox 360 version on a modern console using backwards compatibility, but developer Rockstar Games has made it much easier for everyone.

Rockstar has revealed that a port of the game is headed to Switch and PS4 next week digitally, with a physical release to follow in October. The game was ported to PS4 and Switch by Double Eleven Studios, who previously worked on games like Fallout 76, Rust, Minecraft Dungeons, and Crackdown 3.

It’s worth noting that this is just a port, not a remaster, so you shouldn’t expect any major graphical upgrades. Rockstar says the game will include all of the content from the main game, as well as the paid DLC Undead Nightmare, and some extra content from the Game of the Year edition. What it won’t include is any multiplayer content, as pointed out by a notice on the game’s Switch eShop page:

“Red Dead Redemption features the single-player experiences from both Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare, plus bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition and more. Red Dead Redemption does not feature multiplayer content.”

Read Dead Redemption will be playable on PS5 thanks to its PS4 backwards compatibility, meaning it’ll basically be on every modern platform… except PC. It’s not really known why this new port isn’t available on PC, but it’s a pretty glaring omission when you can play this game literally everywhere else now. Maybe that version is still in the works.

This new port was actually somewhat leaked a couple times earlier this year, after South Korea’s rating board released its rating for a new Red Dead Redemption game. It was subsequently leaked again on Rockstar’s own website, with dataminers finding a logo saying “Rockstar Games Presents Red Dead Redemption”, which previously wasn’t there. And look at that, that’s exactly the logo being used for the game.

Red Dead Redemption will launch digitally on Switch and PS4 on August 17, 2023, followed by a physical release on both platforms on October 13, 2023.
