Spoilers for Virgin River season three follow. It’s been a year since viewers last checked in with Jack, Mel, and the flannel-loving denizens of Virgin Riverand as usual, there were way too many cliffhangers to count. From Mel’s pregnancy to the ongoing mystery surrounding Jack’s shooter, season four is tasked with following up on the show’s most dramatic outing yet. Based on the newest trailer, it also looks like there will be even more to come (drama? in Virgin River? no!), including an apparent legal battle for Mel’s embryos, tension with Jack, and prison trouble for Brady.

“I’m just going to say that season four reveals and answers all the questions, but then presents some more,” Martin Henderson, who plays Jack, told The Digital Fix earlier this year. “I think season four is going to be really satisfying for people because of that giant cliffhanger…which gives a little love/hate situation for the audience, where they love but hate the wait.” The star assured fans that “it’s going to be worth [the wait],” but we’ll be able to find out for ourselves when Virgin River season four premieres July 20. Until then, here’s a recap of all the biggest moments (and remaining questions) from season three.

Who shot Jack in season 3 of Virgin River?

Yes, this was one of the lingering questions going into season three, too—but more than a year later, it still hasn’t been answered! The major development from season three, though, is that Brady was arrested for Jack’s attempted murder, after the apparent gun from the shooting was found hidden in his car. However, this doesn’t feel like a closed case. For starters, Brady insists that he’s been framed, which, given his past with the drug operation, seems super plausible. Some theories even point to Mike being responsible for the shooting. Given his rocky relationship with Brady and his access as a detective, it’s possible that Mike could have framed Brady if he wanted to.

What is Todd and Charmaine’s deal?

Season three introduced Charmaine’s mysterious new fiancé, Todd—and their whirlwind relationship is sketchy for a few reasons. Not only did Charmaine and Todd get engaged just three weeks after meeting, but the new beau has proven himself to be pretty pushy—from getting rid of Charmaine’s dog to trying to remove Jack from his yet-to-be-born twins’ lives (which Jack, being Jack, objected to). So when Charmaine announces that she and Todd got married and are planning to move to Eureka, the vibe is worrying—not celebratory. Even Charmaine seems upset. “Todd doesn’t want you involved with our family.... I’m not gonna risk my marriage in order to defend you,” she tells Jack in episode 10.

It’s not clear if Todd’s power plays are him being a controlling person, or if perhaps—as some fan theories suggest—his out for Jack is connected to the show’s wider crime story line, but here’s hoping season four delivers some answers.

Is Hope okay?

At the end of season three, Hope got into a major car accident after being absent all season long. (In real life, actor Annette O’Toole couldn’t film due to Covid-related travel complications, per Entertainment Weekly.) Hope went into an induced coma to help heal from her injuries, but her life was very much still hanging in the balance by the end of the season. Fortunately, showrunner Sue Tenney didn’t let fans worry too long—as she confirmed to EW last summer, the show will indeed “move ahead” with Hope’s storyline, which involves “the recovery and what she’s dealing with—a traumatic brain injury.” Sure to complicate the couple’s life even further? The arrival of a young man claiming to be Doc’s 19-year-old grandson at the very end of season three.

What happened to Preacher and Christopher?

Season three saw Preacher looking after Christopher, since Paige had to go on the run after killing Wes and hiding from his twin brother, Vince. Despite the scary circumstances surrounding the makeshift family, it was sweet to see them spend time together—while it lasted, anyway. At the end of season three, Preacher was approached by Paige’s friend Sally, who said she wanted to facilitate a safe reunion between Paige and Christopher—but really, drugged Preacher and lured him into the woods, leaving him for dead in an apparent setup for Vince to come for Christopher. Evidently, it works. Per the season four synopsis from Netflix, “even as Preacher forges a new romantic connection, he can’t help but hold out hope for being reunited with Christopher and Paige.”

Who is the father of Mel’s baby?

The biggest reveal of season three? Mel’s pregnancy—and the fact that she doesn’t quite know who the father is. To refresh your memory: During her brief breakup with Jack, Mel traveled to Los Angeles and opted to try getting pregnant with her and Mark’s last two embryos. However, upon her return to Virgin River, she reunited and slept with Jack. The timing prevented her from knowing the paternity of her baby. But fortunately, the question will be answered by the end of season four, Tenney confirmed to TV Insider.
