Recalled dog food sold in Utah could be contaminated with salmonella

TFP Nutrition recalled its Retriever All Life Stages Mini Chunk Chicken Recipe Dry Dog Food on Saturday because of possible salmonella contamination.

A single sample of the dog food tested by the Office of the Texas State Chemist came back positive for salmonella, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The company and FDA haven’t received any reports of pets getting sick from consuming the product or of owners getting sick after handling the product.

TFP Nutrition has “taken corrective action” following the positive test, according to the recall notice on the company’s website.

“We conducted a thorough internal investigation of all systems and processes and have taken corrective action. We are also working with state and federal officials to make sure consumers have all the latest information pertaining to this situation,” the company said.

What dog food was recalled?

Fifty-pound bags of “Retriever All Life Stages Mini Chunk Chicken Recipe Dry Dog Food” with a best buy date of October 2024 and lot codes 3277 TFP and 3278 TFP, which can be found on the second line of the date code, are the only dog food recalled by TFP Nutrition.

Where was the recalled dog food sold?

The recalled dog food was sold exclusively at Tractor Supply Company stores and in the following states:

  • Arkansas.

  • Arizona.

  • California.

  • Louisiana.

  • Mississippi.

  • New Mexico.

  • Nevada.

  • Oklahoma.

  • Texas.

  • Utah.

TFP Nutrition said the recalled dog food can be returned at Tractor Supply Company.

Can pets get salmonella?

Animals, including pets, are often carriers of salmonella and can spread it to their owners. Sometimes infected pets remain healthy and exhibit no symptoms despite their infection, per the FDA. PetMD said salmonella is only fatal in extreme cases for pets.

What are pet salmonella symptoms?

Infected pets can display the following symptoms:

  • Lethargy.

  • Bloody diarrhea.

  • Fever.

  • Vomiting.

How do humans get salmonella from dog food?

Humans can get salmonella by handling contaminated dog food. The FDA says that “if people handle contaminated pet food or a contaminated utensil and then touch their mouth, they can accidentally ingest the bacteria. Pet food that contains raw or uncooked meat is more likely than processed pet food to test positive for salmonella.”

Humans infected with salmonella can exhibit the following symptoms within 12 to 72 hours after infection, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine:

  • Diarrhea.

  • Fever.

  • Abdominal cramps.

  • Chills.

  • Headache.

  • Nausea.

  • Vomiting.

Have other dog food brands been recalled recently?

In September, Mid America Pet Food recalled its Victor Super Premium Dog Food Hi-Pro Plus because of salmonella contamination, the Deseret News previously reported.

No human or pet illnesses associated with the dog food were reported.
