Like Rebel Wilson, I’m a 33-year-old virgin — and I’m proud of it

At 32 years old, Allora Dannon Campbell was ashamed to admit that she was a romantic “late bloomer” — she was a virgin, she hadn’t had her first kiss or ever dated anyone.

“It was such a point of embarrassment,” she told The Post. “Society just makes you feel like it’s this thing that you should be ashamed of and that there’s something wrong with you.”

That’s why Dannon Campbell, now 33, was so excited to hear actress Rebel Wilson share that she lost her virginity at 35.

Revealed in her forthcoming memoir, “Rebel Rising,” Wilson, 44, said she’d often lie about losing her V card so she wouldn’t “look like the biggest loser.” Now, the “Pitch Perfect” star hopes to send a “positive message” that “not everybody has to lose their virginity as a teenager.”

“People think that if you have not lost your virginity at a certain age, if you have not been in a relationship, if no one’s pursued you, then you must be some kind of gargoyle,” Dannon Campbell said. “There has to be something wrong with you.”

Seeing others, like Wilson, normalize virginity later in life is what helped Dannon Campbell become comfortable with her lack of sexual experience.

“There’s this unfair context that late bloomers are miserable when really they were just exploring life in another way,” Dannon Campbell said. “[Rebel’s] lived an extraordinary life and this is just one small part of who she is.”

And it’s true, Dannon Campbell and Wilson aren’t alone: Nearly one in five (19%) people aged 18-24 said that they have never been kissed, according to a 2018 YouGov poll.

For Dannon Campbell, she didn’t actively avoid sex and relationships, it just hadn’t happened for her.

“It kind of boiled down to the fact that I was really concentrated on living my life and nobody was hitting on me so I was just like, ‘Well, let me concentrate on things that I know will bring me joy,'” the Rochester, New York, resident explained.

“I just put my energy into pursuing things that I knew I could get something out of.”

As the years passed, Dannon Campbell began to feel left behind in the romance department as the shame and embarrassment built up. Her virginity became her biggest secret — especially because she thought she was alone.

She downloaded TikTok to entertain herself during the pandemic and came across a video of another later-in-life virgin.

“It was the first time I ever heard somebody admit that life experience out loud and I was absolutely shocked,” Dannon Campbell said.

“I thought I was literally the only person on the planet who got left behind in the romance department.”

After hearing from a few other late bloomers, she decided to challenge herself. Along with a goal to go on eight dates by Easter 2023, Dannon Campbell revealed her own embarrassing secret by sharing it with the 50 TikTok followers she had at the time.

She never expected it, but the video went viral overnight — and was received with “overwhelming positivity.”

“So many people were like, ‘You’re so pretty. You’re so accomplished. You speak so well.’ And I think that’s part of the stigma,” Dannon Campbell shared.

But as thousands of other late bloomers reached out to Dannon Campbell in response to her video, her embarrassment melted away. She now has about 37,000 followers and updates her viewers on her dating life as a 30-something virgin.

When she decided she wanted to share her life with someone but didn’t know how to navigate dating for the first time, she knew she wanted to connect with others — especially since most of the advice out there wasn’t for her age group. So, she started the Facebook group Late Bloomers: Survival Guide, which has amassed nearly 2,000 members seeking advice and sharing stories of their experiences — or lack thereof.

“For most people, it’s just a lack of opportunity that turns into a lack of self-confidence, which turns into embarrassment and shame,” she noted.

“Most people just put their time and energy into things that are rewarding in other ways. So, they’re building lives they love but on their own.”

Since her first viral video, Dannon Campbell has dated her first boyfriend — they’re still together — and had her first kiss.

“Some flowers just bloom later,” she said. “There’s nothing shameful about it. It’s just a part of you.”
