Rebel Wilson Coined a New Dating Term Called Mermaiding & Let’s Hope You Never Need to Try It

Ghosting. Zombie-ing. Gatsbying. Freckling. The modern dating world is full of terms (and potential partners) we’d love to avoid entirely. Easier said than done, right? Well, Rebel Wilson has had some nightmare dates of her own. But, always one to make lemonade from lemons, those cringe-worthy dates have inspired her to coin an entirely new (and hyperbolically funny) dating term: mermaiding.

What’s mermaiding, you may be wondering? It’s completely made up, so we can assure you that you’ve never heard of it before. Honestly, you’ve probably never experienced it either (hopefully).

In the video above, which Wilson made in partnership with Match (in honor of the dating company’s annual Singles in America study), the 39-year-old Cats star succinctly defines mermaiding as something to be avoided at all costs.

She mentions the word at the top of the video, but waits until the end to fill us in on the secret: “Stop searching mermaiding because I just made that up,” she jokes, adding, “It’s, like, when a girl goes out with a guy to a boardwalk and then she gets really bored with the date. And so she just goes into the ocean and you never see her again.”

To be honest, we have been on a date or two that was so bad we would’ve considered jumping into the ocean to get out of it.

So, will we ever encounter mermaiding in the dating wild? Probably not, but stranger things have happened.
