Rebel Moon star Sofia Boutella has spoken out on her film’s negative reception for the first time.

Boutella, who plays Kora in Rebel Moon: Part 1 - A Child of Fire, tells Vulture how damaging the bad reviews were.

"It really affected me for all of those who put so much heart, tears, and sweat in this project," she continued. "It's hard to see something being demolished to that extent. I'm proud to have been part of it, and if there is no more Rebel Moon, it will be a very important part of my life that I will defend forever."

Rebel Moon: Part 1 - A Child of Fire released 15 December, 2023 on Netflix. There were high hopes for director Zack Synder’s original sci-fi blockbuster, but it didn’t deliver.

With a reviewer score of just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 58%, both critics and general viewers were left cold. That doesn’t bode well for the second part of the film, Rebel Moon: Part 2 - The Scargiver, which releases April 19, 2024 on Netflix.

No doubt Boutella’s mentally primed herself for a second pummelling. “I'm just gonna be honest about it,” she says. “I feel like I'm carrying it for everybody that cared so much about this project, and that's what affected me. Not the way I look. If anything, I've been pretty lucky and people like my work in it, but the movie was criticized.”
