The Reason Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Daughter Lilibet Isn't A Princess

After many long months of waiting for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to welcome their second child, we can finally say that she has arrived! Meghan gave birth to a beautiful baby girl over the weekend named Lilibet Diana, and they already love her tons. “It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world,” the couple said in a statement released on Sunday.

So now that Lilibet is part of the royal family, the people want to know: What the heck is her title going to be?? Well, it's a little complicated. Though Prince William and Kate Middleton's children get the “prince” and “princess” titles, a 1917 rule from King George V excludes Lilibet and her brother Archie from getting that same honor:

In modern English, this rule basically means that “prince” and “princess” titles are only allowed to be given to children of the king, children of the king’s sons (that'll be Prince Harry and Prince William), and the eldest son of the eldest son of Charles, Prince of Wales (which is Prince George—Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis get titles since Queen Elizabeth banned the first kid only rule in 2013!). Since Harry is Prince Charles second son, this rule does not apply to him and means that his kids can't be “prince” or “princess.”

Don't feel too bummed, though: This rule is technically subject to change when Prince Charles becomes the King of England someday. Should Meghan and Harry choose, Lilibet (and Archie!) can have her name stylized as “Princess Lilibet” according to royal reporter Victoria Murphy.

It is worth mentioning that Meghan and Harry wanted Archie to have the “prince” title for increased security, but the palace denied their request. So uh, looks like we'll just have to wait and see what happens with Lilibet!
