Entertainment Tonight and Us Weekly got more intel on what led to Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's separation. Both outlets are reporting that Cyrus broke up with Hemsworth, although ET isn't calling it a breakup explicitly. Cyrus, their source said, asked for a break, in part because they could both see a split coming.

"Miley was asking for a break and wanted to soul search and came to the realization she was unhappy," the source said.

Us Weekly added that Cyrus really did fight for her and Hemsworth's relationship. “Miley wanted to make her relationship with Liam work more than anything,” a source said. People and TMZ reported yesterday that Cyrus pushed for the two to go to therapy to work out their issues. Entertainment Tonight independently reported that detail today as well.

A source told Entertainment Tonight that Hemsworth is heartbroken over how public her new romance with Brody Jenner's ex Kaitlynn Carter is. "Liam loves Miley and is crushed by all of this," the source said. "But right now Miley doesn't want to answer to anyone. She still feels the need to explore herself, her sexuality and her music. Miley has been working in the studio and wants to blow off steam."

Cyrus was always looking for an "untraditional relationship," the source said. And she and Hemsworth really had it for a while. "Right after their wedding [in December], they had a carefree, no-pressure relationship. Miley was looking for a nontraditional relationship because she thinks marriage is old fashioned and didn't believe in the traditional way. Liam agreed they'd have a unique union."

Hemsworth released his only statement on the separation this morning on his Instagram. He wrote:

Hi all
Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward.
This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false.
Peace and Love.
