Last Man Standing fans were hit with sadness as they watched the series finale of the beloved show on May 20. Since we're so devestated to say goodbye to Mike Baxter (Tim Allen), Vanessa (Nancy Travis), Kristin (Amanda Fuller), Mandy (Molly McCook), and Eve (Kaitlyn Dever), many of us can't help but wonder exactly why the show has come to an end after season 9.

Unlike when ABC canceled the show in 2017, there isn't any big drama surrounding the answer. This time around, Last Man Standing simply ran its course, according to Tim.

"We had all considered to end the show after last season [season 8], but together with Fox, we decided to add a year so we could produce a full season to create the gentle and fun goodbye," Tim told Deadline.

So it really seems like less of a cancellation and more like a group decision to end the show on a high note, and that Tim and the crew did. The Wrap reports that 2.5 million viewers tuned into the series finale last night — and although reviews were mixed — many took to social media to express how sad they were to see the hit Fox show end. "I’m dreading the series finale of Last Man Standing. I really enjoy the show and will miss it very much," one person tweeted. "So sad. Tim Allen is one of the best," said another on Instagram.

Luckily, fans can still see plenty of Tim on his show Assembly Required, and we'll be sure to follow along with the rest of the cast to see what they end up doing next!
