Atlanta may be over, but Donald Glover’s career as a TV auteur is just getting started. Shortly after the success of 2023’s Swarm, the Emmy winner will be back behind the camera again with a Prime Video adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the 2005 blockbuster that is perhaps best known for launching the behemoth that is Brangelina. This time, however, Glover will be in front of the camera again too as John Smith, one half of the titular spy couple.
Glover co-created the show with Francesca Sloane, who was a supervising producer on Seasons 3 and 4 of Atlanta. The duo haven’t said much about the direction they’re planning to take the series, but Glover told Interview in 2022 that he’s excited for the world to see the finished product. ”I really love the show,” he added.

What is Mr. & Mrs. Smith about?
Specific plot details about Mr. & Mrs. Smith are still scarce, but it follows a similar premise to that of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The series focuses on a married couple who both work as assassins, but neither party is aware that their spouse has the same (highly classified) job. According to an official plot summary, the series tracks the titular duo after they both agree to start working as spies for a mysterious agency.
When does Mr. & Mrs. Smith premiere?
A July 2023 Prime Video teaser announced that Mr. & Mrs. Smith will premiere in November 2023. However, Prime Video announced on Thursday, Sept. 14, that the reimagining will now arrive in “early 2024.”
Why did Phoebe Waller-Bridge leave Mr. & Mrs. Smith?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge was originally slated to star opposite Donald Glover in the series and signed on as a writer, but she left the project in September 2021. In a June 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, Waller-Bridge hinted that she and Glover had different visions for the show but still respect and like one another. “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it—still care about it. And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision,” she explained, describing creative collaboration as being like a marriage. “And some marriages don’t work out.”
Glover, meanwhile, said in 2022 that there were no hard feelings. “I still like her,” he told Interview magazine. “I assume she still likes me.”

Donald Glover (John Smith)
After wrapping up his Emmy-winning stint on Atlanta, Glover will be back on TV as Mr. Smith. In 2023, he made a cameo appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. On the other side of the camera, he co-created and executive produced the Prime Video series Swarm, about a young woman obsessed with a fictional but very Beyoncé-like pop star.

Maya Erskine (Jane Smith)
Erskine replaced Waller-Bridge as Mrs. Smith after the latter’s exit from the project. Erksine is perhaps best known for her role on the short-lived but beloved series PEN15, which she also co-created. In 2022, she played Sully on the Star Wars miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Parker Posey
So far, all of the other cast members on Mr. & Mrs. Smith are playing undisclosed roles, but Parker Posey doesn’t make trash. She was most recently seen on the big screen in Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid and appeared in the 2022 series The Staircase.
Michaela Coel
In 2022, Coel made her Marvel debut as Aneka in Black Panther. The year prior, she became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for limited series writing for her HBO series I May Destroy You.
John Turturro
The prolific character actor was most recently in the Apple TV+ series Severance. He also played crime boss Carmine Falcone in 2022’s The Batman, otherwise known as the Robert Pattinson one.

Paul Dano
Last year, Dano starred alongside Turturro in The Batman as The Riddler; he also appeared in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. Before Mr. & Mrs. Smith debuts, fans can catch him in Dumb Money, Craig Gillespie’s upcoming film about the rise of meme stocks.
Are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV show?
Absolutely not. Fans can maybe hold out the tiniest bit of hope for one of them to pop up in a cameo role, but based on their acrimonious divorce, it seems extremely unlikely they would reunite for a project reimagining the movie that kicked off their decade-long relationship.

Is there a Mr. & Mrs. Smith trailer?
No trailer has been released yet, but a July 2023 teaser for several Prime Video shows included a brief glimpse at Mr. & Mrs. Smith. “This marriage is starting off on a great foot,” Glover deadpans to Erskine in the clip.
