Ready or Not, Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costumes Are Coming

With the end of summer fast approaching, it’s only a matter of time before Halloween stuff begins crowding the shelves—and the questionable costumes start rolling in.

This year, it’s happening earlier than usual. According to the New York Daily News, yearly Halloween pop-up mega chain Spirit Halloween has already placed orders for a Caitlyn Jenner-inspired costume. With the immense amount of press Jenner has received over the past several months, it seems like an inevitable development.

Currently, there are no photos or descriptions of what the costume will look like or be comprised of (though a Twitter user did upload what seems to be a Bruce Jenner/Caitlyn Jenner costume of sorts)—but Spirit PR woman Trusha Lombardo confirmed its existence, calling Jenner “the most important real-life superhero of the year.”

“Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her,” she continued.

But reactions are divided. While dressing up as Jenner for Halloween isn’t inappropriate in itself, some worry about the costume’s potential to be offensive, and even transphobic.

As Vincent Villano, of the National Center for Transgender Equality, told the Huffington Post, “There’s no tasteful way to ‘celebrate’ Caitlyn Jenner or respect transgender people this way on the one night of the year when people use their most twisted imaginations to pretend to be villains and monsters.” A Change.org petition has also been started, in an effort to convince Spirit not to sell the costume.

The Twittersphere seems to agree, with users tweeting out anti-Cait costume messages like, “Am I the only one who’s offended that Spirit Halloween will send a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume this year?” and “The struggle that Caitlyn Jenner has to face isn’t a Halloween costume. Whoever made this is a shitty person.”

Others don’t see what the big deal is, arguing that, as a celeb, Jenner is fair game for being poked fun of.

“She’s a celebrity. Almost all celebrities have a costume. Why should she be excluded. = means =,” said one. Another referenced the double standards when it comes to “socially acceptable” offensive costumes: “Mass outcry over Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume but nothing about the ongoing Indian Chief, Mexican mariachi, Geisha or other costumes.”

And others, still, saw another, lighter reason why a Caitlyn Jenner costume may be problematic:
