Reading’s playground splash pads open for season

Reading’s playground splash pads are officially open for the season, the city announced Friday.

“Our splash pads provide a refreshing escape from the summer heat and offer families a safe and enjoyable way to spend time outdoors together,” Mayor Eddie Moran said. “We invite everyone to come out and make a splash this summer.”

The water-play features can be found at the following parks:

• 11th and Pike streets.

• Baer Park, West Douglass and Clinton streets.

• City Park, North 11th and Washington streets.

• Front and Schiller streets.

• Pendora Park, South 18th and Forrest streets.

The spray and splash area at Baer Park is new this year and is part of $619,000 improvement project that includes new pour-in-place safe playground surface, ADA-accessible walkways and benches, enhanced lighting and refurbished tennis and pickleball courts.

Last summer, the Lonnie Walker IV Foundation teamed with the city to refurbish the park’s basketball court, and lighting for the park’s baseball field is in the works.

The city’s splash pads are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Labor Day.
