Former first lady Michelle Obama just posted a lengthy Twitter thread in response to this morning's election news, and her words are so important. She expressed her excitement over the incoming Joe Biden–Kamala Harris administration but cautioned supporters that the fight to fix America is not over and that Donald Trump's continued popularity is a sign of work still to be done.

Without naming the outgoing president directly, Obama made her feelings clear, writing that the president-elect and vice president–elect would “restore some dignity" to the White House, and characterized the Trump administration as one of “lies, hate, chaos, and division.”

“I'm beyond thrilled that my friend @JoeBiden and our first Black and Indian-American woman Vice President, @Kamala Harris, are headed to restore some dignity, competence, and heart at the White House,” she began her thread. “Our country sorely needs it.”

However, Obama made it clear there is still work to be done.

Her most emphatic message is to Democrats, who, without the most visible figure of hatred in the White House, could become complacent and let up the fight for progress that has gained momentum these past four years. To them, she wrote, “the path to progress will always be uphill. We’ll always have to scrape and crawl up toward that mountaintop. And two years from now, four years from now, there will once again be no margin for error.”

On a more pressing and tangible level, she mentioned the two senate runoffs in Georgia, which will likely decide which party controls Congress and could greatly influence future President Biden's ability to govern. This presidential election is over, but the election season isn't.

Her husband, former president Barack Obama, also took to Twitter, posting a statement praising his former V.P. and thanking the many volunteers and organizers who helped turn out a historic number of votes in this election. With the margins in many states razor-thin, this win truly was a collective effort.

Thank you, Barack and Michelle Obama. Wise words from people who know. Celebrate today; work again tomorrow.
