In the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before book series, we meet Lara Jean Covey, high school student and hopeless romantic, who pens love letters to her crushes (Peter, Josh, John, Lucas, and Kenny) but never sends them out. Instead, she puts all of her feelings onto paper, seals the envelope, then stashes the message in a box under her bed. It’s a perfect plan — until one crush, Peter, approaches Lara Jean one day to tell her he doesn’t feel the same way and she comes to discover that somehow, each and every love letter has been mailed to their intended (but not really intended) recipient.
Author Jenny Han, who also penned The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy (now a series on Prime Video), chronicles Lara Jean’s journey in love and relationships over three books: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. As she navigates her now-complicated love life — and realizes the good that can come from confronting your true feelings — we meet the closest people in Lara Jean’s life, including sisters Kitty and Margot and dad Dan.
All three books came to life in film adaptations for Netflix, which starred Lana Condor as Lara Jean, Noah Centineo as Peter, Anna Cathcart as Kitty, Janel Parrish as Margot, and John Corbett as Dan. Now, the trilogy serves as the inspiration behind the Netflix spin-off series, XO, Kitty. Anna Cathcart reprises her role as the titular character, as she follows her heart to Seoul, South Korea, to attend the same school as her late mom — and reunite with her boyfriend.
Although there’s no book companion to XO, Kitty, you can revisit Kitty, Lara Jean, and the rest of the Coveys in the To All the Boys series. So, after you binge-watch season 1, grab a blanket and get cozy, because here’s your complete guide to the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before books in order.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Book one introduces Lara Jean Covey, a high school student with a habit of penning intimate love letters to her crushes: Peter, John, Lucas, Kenny… and Josh, who also happens to be her older sister Margot’s boyfriend. But she doesn’t send these letters. She seals and addresses the envelopes, then stashes them in a hatbox under her bed.
Her method foils, however, when Peter Kavinsky — one said crush — approaches Lara Jean to confront her about the letter and admit that he doesn’t feel the same way. Lara Jean realizes that the letters have somehow been mailed in error, but rather than face her feelings, she and Peter come up with a plan. They will “fake date,” so Lara Jean can continue hiding how she feels about Josh, and Peter can make his ex-girlfriend jealous. What could go wrong?
P.S. I Still Love You
Lara Jean and Peter’s “fake date” plan turns into real feelings and a real relationship. Which is great, until John Ambrose from model U.N. — another of Lara Jean’s crushes and love letter recipient — comes back into her life, reminds her why she fell for him in the first place, and makes her love life a lot more complicated.
Always and Forever, Lara Jean
It’s senior year of high school and Lara Jean and Peter are more in love than ever. She has so much to look forward to, and while she throws herself into the plans for her dad’s upcoming wedding, she needs to make a decision about where she’s going to attend college. As much as she wants to go to the same school as Peter, the best-laid plans are not always the right ones, and she must face the possibility of a long-distance relationship — or a break-up.
