Almost four decades ago, jazz singer Anne Keeler and her then-husband Gordon Melcher commissioned Ray Kappe to extensively remodel an existing home they had purchased in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. Fully reworked from the ground up by the revered modernist architect, and still owned by Keeler, the eye-catching abode has now surfaced on the market for the first time in its history with a $12 million price tag. The listing is held by Crosby Doe of Crosby Doe Associates.

Completed in 1991—and fittingly known as the “Keeler Residence”—the striking treehouse-like structure is set on a heavily wooded parcel spanning less than a quarter-acre of land, and marked by a multi-tiered façade clad in redwood, teak, fir, concrete and glass. Inside, four bedrooms and three bathrooms are filtered across a little more than 4,100 square feet of meticulously maintained and recently updated living space, all of it dramatically hovering off the side of a steep hill offering up stellar canyon and ocean vistas.

An open-plan living and dining area is showcased by a floating-hearth fireplace resting amid a concrete wall.

A driveway above the house leads to a gated parking plaza, carport with room for two vehicles and direct access to the residence, while a series of steps beginning at the street level below winds its way up through a forested water garden before emptying out at a second entrance. Both open into a stunning double-height atrium topped by a vaulted skylight and displaying hardwood floors inlaid with glass panels.

Among the highlights is an alluring floating-hearth fireplace that serves as a focal point for the open-concept living and dining area, along with an eat-in kitchen sporting a central island and connected breakfast bar flanked by banquette seating. Also standing out is a media room adorned with a wall of built-in shelving, as well as a fireside primary bedroom that comes complete with French doors spilling out to a private balcony and a soaking tub-equipped bathroom. There’s also a separate music studio with a bath that’s been converted into guest accommodations.

Kappe, who passed away in 2019 at age 92, designed 100 custom residences during his lengthy career. He also founded the Southern California Institute for Architecture, which is widely regarded as one of the nation’s top architecture schools.
