Rashida and Kidada Jones on Throwing the Ultimate Sisters Soiree
It may be a pleasant 72 degrees in Los Angeles in December, but that hasn’t stopped actress, director, and producer Rashida Jones and her sister, author and designer Kidada Jones from getting in the holiday spirit. Vogue stopped by as the sisters prepped for the ultimate holiday party—and found the perfect festive looks from Banana Republic’s holiday collection.
The Joneses’ normal holiday tradition is a family affair—orchestrated by Rashida and Kidada’s father, music legend Quincy Jones. “Every year our whole family gets together at my dad’s house; that’s seven kids, and the grandkids and the great-grandkids. And the boyfriends and the girlfriends and the cousins and the wives and the ex-wives,” says Rashida. “Everybody!” laughs Kidada. “It’s a big, happy family and we eat a ton, and we have this wonderful father-son jazz duo, an upright bass and piano, perform. It’s really fun.” But this year, the sisters had something a little different in mind: hosting their own event at Rashida’s house. “Everyone’s invited,” says Kidada. “Well . . . we’ll see,” deadpans Rashida.
Before decorating and prepping the house with gifts and treats, the sisters focus on their party looks from Banana Republic. As the sisters explore the wintry mix of lush sweaters, elevated athleisure pieces, and sleek suits, they explain that their personal aesthetics haven’t changed much over the decades. Rashida says she gravitates toward “coats, jackets, and prints,” looking for outfits that are more structured with standout fabrics. Kidada, on the other hand, says she “loves anything casual that doesn’t require dry cleaning.”
At our shoot, Rashida pulled out some looks to propose Kidada try on. Her suggestions for her sporty sister? Pops of cherry red, plus a few miniskirts (some sparkly, some solid), all tailored to perfection. Kidada chose a sweetly romantic confetti-flecked sweater for Rashida to pair with a shimmery, pleated metallic skirt. True to life, the sisters often shop each other’s closets as they do in our video. “Our sense of style is exactly the same as it was when we were little girls,” says Rashida. “We laugh about it every time we meet up to go somewhere because absolutely nothing has changed. Kidada is in a sweatshirt and sneakers and I’m in a striped top and a trenchcoat.”
