Rare Sighting of North Atlantic Whale Swimming with Her Calf Captured on Video
This is just so beautiful.
On March 27, people were so excited to see a North Atlantic right whale and her calf swimming in the Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. There are an estimated less than 440 North Atlantic Right Whales left on earth. These critically endangered animals can grow between 45 and 55 feet and weigh up to 70 tons.
The reason why this sighting is so important is because North Atlantic right whales have a low reproductive rate, with females giving birth to a single calf every 3-5 years. Watch the following clip to see these beautiful animals in action.
The Cape Cod Canal was closed for more than 5 hours while the mama and her baby were escorted as they swam through it. Police kept the canal closed for about an hour after the whales left in case they decided to return.
On Friday, the Massachusetts Environmental Police said that approximately 60 to 70 North Atlantic right whales — about 20% of all the North Atlantic right whales left on Earth — are gathered in lower Cape Cod Bay.

How lucky to be able to see these animals in person. According to WCVB, so far this year, 12 right whale calves have been identified in the waters off the southeast United States, where they are born. Here's hoping that bodes well for the conservation of these beautiful creatures.
