We Ranked Every Song From Miley Cyrus's 'Endless Summer Vacation'

Pack your bags everyone, Miley Cyrus is ready to take us on a trip. In her new album, Endless Summer Vacation (out now), the singer weaves 13 songs into a harrowing journey of self discovery. The powerhouse record sets the scene with “Flowers,” a club-ready break-up track where Cyrus sings about, of course, loving herself better than anyone can. But don’t be fooled—this project isn’t a trite guide to processing a breakup. Throughout the album's 43-minute runtime, Cyrus explores a range of emotions, starting with pride, which veers into resentment, lust, anger, yearning, hope, and finally? Acceptance.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the singer revealed that the album's pacing was inspired by the way a day shifts from dusk till dawn. “In the nighttime, it feels that there’s a slinky, seediness, and kind of a grime, but a glamor at the same time,” she said. “In the evening it’s a great time for rest, it’s a time to recover—or it’s a time to go out and experience kind of a wild side. In L.A there’s a certain energy to the night that you can kind of feel trouble boil up to the surface and it’s very inspiring to me.” On the other hand, mornings, according to the singer, are full of potential. “There’s like a buzz, an energy, and there’s a potential of new possibilities. It’s a new day.”

In the context of Endless Summer Vacation, the night represents every song in which Cyrus boasts her independence, plays the seductress, or screams in anger. Meanwhile, the morning tracks are more sobering. That’s where you’ll find her slower ballads and musings about life. Think of the journey as an overnight road trip. Cyrus picks us up in the dead of the night and we reach our destination in the early morning—with clarity that only a new day can bring.

1. You

If you're a fan of Plastic Hearts, you’ll love “You.” This track is the closest we’ll get to another rock record, but I’m not complaining! Cyrus’s powerful vocals are on full display while she sings about her ideal type of love. Of all the songs on Endless Summer Vacation, this seems to be the most honest—and is arguably the best-performed one.

2. Muddy Feet

As the saying goes, hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn. In “Muddy Feet,” Cyrus kicks her lover out the house when she realizes they’ve been unfaithful. It’s a quick song, but it packs a fiery punch—earning it the next spot on my list.

3. Flowers

Flowers went number one this year, and for good reason. The track is perfect for getting ready, going out, or casting spells on your ex. Whatever floats your boat.

4. Rose Colored Lenses

Cyrus pleas for a problem-free romance in “Rose Colored Lenses.” The song shows a much more relaxed version of Cyrus. It's one where she is free to daydream, and happy to take you along for the ride.

5. Jaded

Cyrus sings directly to her ex in this track, apologizing for the way their relationship ended. It’s loud, and earnest, and easy to sing along to. My type of music.

6. Violet Chemistry

This slinky track is another club-ready anthem. It’s a fun song about lust—and I can already hear it thumping through the speakers of a New York Citty bar. My only complaint is that it doesn’t display the singer’s vocal range.

7. Flowers (Demo)

This stripped-down version of “Flowers” is a delicate ode to self-love. Cyrus sings it like a lullaby to herself.

8. Wonder Woman

“Wonder Woman” is written about Cyrus’ grandmother. In a lyric explainer for Spotify, she said the song is about “generational strength and the wisdom that my grandma gave to my mom.”

9. Thousand Miles ft. Brandi Carlile

Keeping with the theme of womanhood, “Thousand Miles” is about Cyrus’s relationship with her sister. The singer told Spotify she originally wrote the track in 2016 after a family friend lost her sister to suicide. Since then, the singer says the track has evolved into something “so far from the sadness that inspired the song.”

10. River

“River” is another pop track on Endless Summer. The song is full of lust and drama—and this morning, Cyrus dropped a music video to fully encapsulate the vibe.

11. Island

“Island” is both wispy and winding. In this track, Cyrus sings about escaping reality to find her peace of mind. It's not as punchy as the rest of the album, but "Island" is the type of song you can put on and drift away to.

12. Handstand

Though “Handstand” is interesting to listen to, it’s less of a song and more of an interlude. Cyrus talks about dancing “until there was nothing left” with her friend Twitchy, and driving boats on open water. It's not the best track on the album, but even so, it leaves you eager to hear more.
