Ralph Lauren Still Knows How To Freak It With the Classics

Ralph Lauren invented Americana fashion. Think about the distinctly witty way he mixes American fashion staples—blue jeans with tuxedo jackets, sport coats with sneakers, cowboy boots with suits—and you can see how his personal style is basically a national treasure.

On Thursday, Lauren demonstrated his ability to mingle all the notes of American style once again. At a screening for Western Stars, a documentary about the making of Bruce Springsteen’s latest album of the same name, Lauren wore his trademark distressed jeans, a double-breasted blazer with gold buttons, and techy sneakers—the circa-1997 Air Bakin, to be specific. The Navy-inspired blazer has two gold embroidered service stripes on the cuffs, eight fantastically gold buttons, and Navy SEAL-inspired military ribbons, which pick up the red and yellow of his Tim Hardaway-adjacent shoes. He pulled it all together with a denim button-up shirt. Vintage basketball shoes and naval uniform motifs all in a single outfit? Lauren still knows how to freak it with the classics.
