Rachel McAdams keeps her personal life so unfailingly private that we didn’t even know she was pregnant until around six weeks before she welcomed her baby boy.

The Oscar nominee just quietly fell off the radar until giving birth, and even now, 7 months later, a McAdams spotting is about as common as catching a glimpse of Central Park’s hot duck.

That being said, it came as a shock when the actress opened up about the new love of her life in an interview with The Sunday Times. “It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, hands down,” McAdams shared — and considering that she used to date Ryan Gosling, that’s really saying something.

“I’m having more fun being a mum than I’ve ever had,” she went on. “Everything about it is interesting and exciting and inspiring to me. Even the tough days — there’s something delightful about them.”

The Disobedience star has been romantically linked to her current boyfriend, screenwriter Jamie Linden, since April 2016 — the latest in a string of Hollywood beaus which included Gosling, Josh Lucas, Michael Sheen, and Taylor Kitsch. So why, at 38, did McAdams (now 40) decide it was time to start a family?

“[People say] your life is not your own anymore,” she said of having a child, “but I had 39 years of me, I was sick of me, I was so happy to put the focus on some other person.”

“I waited a long time [for motherhood],” she continued. “It’s just how it happened. And I didn’t want to do it before it was the right time.”

McAdams admits she’s enjoying the change of pace afforded by parenthood, and vows to keep her son’s life “private, even if mine isn’t.”
