Rachel Bilson Is Enjoying the Magic of Christmas With Her Daughter

There is no denying the magic of the holiday season. Whether it's the fantastical stories about Santa Claus traveling around the world to deliver presents, the smell of Christmas cookies baking in the oven, or the cozy feeling of snuggling on the couch under a sea of blankets to escape the winter cold, this really is the most wonderful time of the year. And for Rachel Bilson, tapping into that Christmas magic has become even more important since becoming a mom.
"Having a kid at Christmas is just the best," the actress tells Woman's Day. Thanks to her 6-year-old daughter, Briar, she's been able to enjoy all of the tiny magical moments that make Christmas extra special for children, and simultaneously even better for adults, too.
"You get to make Santa's footprints coming out of the fireplace," Bilson says of celebrating the holidays with her little one. "And she likes to stay up late, and we have bells that we'll ring so she can hear Santa's sleigh. That's just the most exciting part — having a kid at Christmas is just so fun."
Bilson and her daughter also plan to make some Christmas memories in the kitchen, where she spends a significant amount of time. "I love, love cooking and my daughter's gotten super into it," she explains. "It's something that we get to do together, which I'm always into because there's only so many Barbie scenarios I can come up with."
She's gotten some extra help in the kitchen from her Amazon Alexa Echo Show 8, which she uses to double check recipes, keep track of her to do lists, and even call up her mom when she needs some cooking tips. "It keeps you connected in such a disconnected time, which has been so nice to have that connection and have that help, especially as a single mom."
Luckily, her Christmas will be full of in-person connection, as some of her family has joined her quarantine pod. "My family's tradition Christmas Eve is we always do a big Italian feast," she says. "This year, Briar's gonna help with the meatballs and the Christmas cookies, we have a lot of traditional cookies that we do, so that's gonna be fun to do together."
And after all the Christmas music, family feasts, and playtime with her daughter, Bilson has a magical Christmas tradition of her own that she always makes time for. "My tradition is Just Friends," she says, referring to the early 2000s romantic comedy starting Ryan Reynolds andAmy Smart. "I watch it every Christmas; it's my favorite movie of all time."
After a year filled with so much loss, uncertainty, and change, it could be easy for anyone to essentially give up on the "magic" of the holiday season. But through the eyes of a child, it's easy to se that even in the toughest of time, that magic still exists.
